The D&D world has been fascinated by drow ever since the name Drizzt appeared in print and this did not exclude me. The thing that was always fascinating to me is the idea of the entirety of the drow society and how it functioned - how they lived together, how they managed to prosper while being... well, mostly evil.
So was born the idea for a place where these things could be explored - both by adventure designers and writers as well as by players and adventurers. So why not Menzoberranzan or another prominent city? Aside from the fact that in writing within the sphere of the CCC program, one's geography is limited, the simple fact is that I wanted to have a place that could be (a) controlled and (b) not subject to too much pre-existing history.
But we've barely seen this "protectorate"! True, in Six Summoned Swords, the protectorate is barely mentioned. This is intended. As a matter of fact, the entire Swords Below the Moonsea trilogy serves as a sort of prelude to the place. Next year's adventures will delve fully into the protectorate. In addition to writing several of these, I am working to get a few other authors involved in publishing adventures set in the area.
My upcoming Guide to The Zethlentyn Protectorate is something I'm putting together and intend to release alongside the two Swords adventures later this year.
Stay tuned for more!
